Quick highlights of the 3rd Annual Orlando Tech Week

T4S is a loud and vocal supporter of the Orlando Tech community. Last month’s Tech Week was a great opportunity for our members to enjoy a week-long celebration of startups & technology. Our members had a great time participating on the various events that were taking place.

 

Among the activities were the Orlando Tech Tour which offered a behind the scenes look at local tech companies, the Orlando Tech Meetup and the Future of Orlando conference that highlights the latest trends. Our sponsor, Informulate also sponsored the Lean Startup Orlando meetup where 70 people crammed together to listen to Laura Klein, Lean UX Guru who web conferenced in from San Francisco. Special mention to local Tech Accelerator Venture ScaleUp, who had their 1 year anniversary during Tech Week. Our founder, Rajiv Menon, is a mentor to the current cohort of starters graduating from the accelerator this month. VSU was founded by Dennis Pape and hosted at the coworking space, Catalyst. It is focused on identifying, nurturing, and accelerating high-growth entrepreneurs by connecting high-growth entrepreneurs to mentors that have built and exited startups that have scaled and has won a Small Business Administration Growth Accelerator Fund Award – 1 of only 3 in Florida and 80 nationwide.

 

The Orlando Startup & Tech scene has come a long way, and we look forward to contributing as much as we possibly can to its growth and maturity!

 

Introducing FlashSolve: Quick, easy, action-oriented networking

Here’s a shout-out to the “Work Smarter Not Harder” crowd – Do you have a business problem that you wished you could crowdsource some answers for? You might want introductions to the right people, or a growth hack, or just need help getting something done. Or maybe you are a compulsive problem solver who wants to work on interesting problems? You might want to get hired or land a contract or just show off your creativity. Well, we’ve got just the thing and its called FlashSolve.

What’s that? FlashSolve is a T4S branded event that furthers our goal of networking by working. It is a rapid-fire 90 min session featuring 4-5 business leaders that present problems to the audience such as ”We moved to MongoDB and performance sucks” or “We are launching a new product but have never set up a call center before” If audience members have solutions, ideas, or introductions they can share it. E.g. “Fix your schema” or “I know a guy who does call center outsourcing”

Here is how it works:

1) Smart CrowdSourcer take 5 mins to talk about their business problem.
2) FlashSolvers ask questions and provide solutions for 15 mins, and on the to next one
3) Our super-helpful moderators collect all the feedback and email all respondents to a particular problem.
4) That’s it, the connection is made! CrowdSourcers and FlashSolvers can follow up as needed.

The Internet and social networking are changing the way we are interacting with people, whether they are friends, family or working relationships. While the many positive sides of online communication can’t be disputed there are also downsides that can’t be ignored. How can you make a lasting impression and stand out from the competition? LinkedIn is great but its so much better to really connect with professionals by actually working together on problems.

To create the best profile ever, just tell your story with pride. We recommend the Present-Past-Future method of describing where you are now, where you’ve been, and where you’d like to be.

Follow these steps to make sure you stand out!

  • Highlight things that make you unique as a team member and in the fields you are developing.
  • Create a big picture of what you can offer.
  • Include tags so others can find you (remember tags are the areas you want to learn/contribute on and may or may not be areas you are an expert on)
  • Upload your photo or company logo to build credibility.
  • Keep your profile concise and to the point in 3 paragraphs or less.
  • Provide a link to your portfolio or project to demonstrate your skills or product.

Filling in blank profiles is always like being asked that vague and sweaty palm producing interview question: “Tell me about yourself.” So conclude your profile with something dynamic that exudes some personality. Try one of these thought starters and expound upon it or change it up in one or two sentences to fit your message:

  1. “I can summarize who I am in three words.” Grabs their attention immediately. Demonstrates your ability to be concise, creative and compelling.
  2. “The quotation I live my life by is…” Proves that personal development is an essential part of your growth plan. Also shows your ability to motivate yourself.
  3. “My personal philosophy is…” Companies hire athletes – not shortstops. This line indicates your position as a thinker, not just an employee.
  4. “Well, I googled myself this morning, and here’s what I found…”Tech-savvy, fun, cool people would say this. Unexpected and memorable.
  5. “My passion is…” People don’t care what you do – people care who you are. And what you’re passionate about is who you are. Plus, passion unearths enthusiasm.
  6. “If Hollywood made a move about my life, it would be called…”Engaging, interesting and entertaining.
  7. “The compliment people give me most frequently is…” Almost like a testimonial, this response also indicates self-awareness and openness to feedback.
